Creating A Storage System

In designing your storage system for production, it's important to understand your needs and budget so you can get the best to meet those targets.

Functionality - What is the drive going to be used for?

  • Working Drive (Use often)
  • Back Up (Could be always or partially on)
  • Archival (Use when needed)

Characteristics

  • Physical size
  • Capacity
  • Speed
  • Connectivity
  • Longevity
  • Redundancy

Location - Typically the further away the slower it is in bandwidth and latency.

  • Direct Attached
  • Network Attached
  • Cloud / Offsite

Manual vs Automated Backups

There's nothing wrong with doing manual backups as long as it's a process that you're committed to doing. This can be setup / initiated on a "main" computer or on a NAS (which is essentially a small computer anyway).
