Using Multi Aspect Ratio For Content Creation
If you don't know what "open gate" shooting means, let me introduce you to this flexible way of working. For cameras that support this mode (and many don't), it basically lets you record the native ratio of the sensor of a camera. Typically we see a lot of wide screen usage with TVs and phones using 16:9 horizontal and 9:16 vertical ratios so most cameras and phones evolved to only record in those ratios. The problems is when you want to crop content for other dimensions you end up losing a lot of resolution. e.g. Doing a vertical crop from a 16:9 source. "Open gate" is less wide and could be something like 3:2 (which is a typical photo ratio), to 4:3 (which is from micro four thirds cameras), and others cameras are close to those.
I'm going to walkthrough setting up a shoot with a Lumix S5 II which supports 3:2 open gate.
